Skype brings video calling to Android

SkypeDroid

Skype finally brings two-way video calling to Android on the Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro

After a long wait, a new Skype update has finally brought video calling to the Android app.

Of course, as will almost all Android updates, not everyone could be accommodated right out of the gate.

The first wave of devices that will be supported are the Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro with Android 2.3 or higher on board.

Presumably, the rest of the Android phones out there won’t be far behind. you are lucky enough to posess one of these devices, the new and improved app will allow you to make video calls between Android devices, from Android to iPhone, and to Skype-equipped PCs, Macs and TVs.

The update also includes support for SMS messaging.

Check out the following demo video to see the face calling feature in action.

Skype for iPad promo video leaked

Apple iPad 2

A promotional video of Skype for iPad leaked when a Skype employee mistakenly posted it to the company’s YouTube account

A promotional video for Skype’s long-awaited iPad app has leaked on YouTube. Posted accidentally, the video was supposed to be kept private until the app officially launched in the iTunes App Store next Tuesday.

The video demos the application’s video chat capabilities, which rival that of Apple’s built-in FaceTime service with a window for both the person you’re chatting with, and one to view yourself in. The video also shows Skpe dialing and chat.

Skype’s has had an application available for the iPhone since 2009, though it only added two-way video calling a few months back. An iPad app though only seemed like a natural step.

Overall, the big difference from Apple’s FaceTime service is that Skype’s application brings video chat over 3G networks. FaceTime currently only works over Wi-Fi, something Apple it will change. They just aren’t really sure when.

Additionally, Skype’s iPad application brings video chat to owners of the first-generation Apple tablet. Apple does not allow FaceTime currently on the iPad 1.

Anyway, to take a look at what Skype for iPad will look like, take a look at the leaked promo below! Pretty awesome stuff.

HTC Thunderbolt Skype Video Chat Demo

This is a demo is the Skype video chat pre-release software for the Verizon HTC Thunderbolt. It lets you video chat over WiFi, 3G, or 4G. It also allows you to toggle between the front and rear camera. As you can see, the quality is quite good, with crisp audio and high framerates. When you use this over 3G, the quality degrades pretty significantly. Download info: is.gd
