T-Mobile deploys first solar cell tower in Pennsylvania

T-Mobile USA has deployed a solar-powered cell phone tower in Chalfont, Pennsylvania, the first of its kind in the United States, according to GigaOm. The cell tower is powered by 12 solar panels, which is apparently enough to power the device, and even provide some power to the grid. GigaOm noted that T-Mobile could use the site for good PR using green marketing, but that it can take a while for the benefits of electricity savings from solar power to take effect. Solar powered wireless towers are more commonly used in developing countries.

T-Mobile USA fires up first solar-powered cell site in Pennsylvania

A solar-powered cell site? In Pennsylvania? Say it ain’t so! Rather than heading to Death Valley or southern Nevada, T-Mobile USA has selected the bustling metropolis of Chalfont, Pennsylvania for its first US-based solar cell site. According to a report over at GigaOM, the carrier isn’t dishing any real details on the new development, only saying that it generates enough power to take the site “off-the-grid” and occasionally feed extra power back into said grid. It’s likely that the site is primarily being built for positive PR and as a test for future rollouts, as the actual cost for installing this versus a standard grid-powered site is “around two to three times more.” But hey, there’s nothing like looking forward to the karma that comes with giving Ma Earth a kiss this big, right?

T-Mobile Constructs Solar-Powered Cell Site In Pennsylvania

T-Mobile, fresh off some sort of short code carrier controversy, has been experimenting with solar-powered cell towers. The company has installed the tower (well, full cell site) in eastern Pennsylvania. It’s probably done so for two reasons: one, yeah, it could help the company save a bit of money in the longterm, and two, nothing like some good PR.
