Yahoo Local beta launches for iPhone, Android

Today Yahoo announced its new Yahoo Local product is available for the iPhone and Android smartphones in beta form. Yahoo Local provides users with nearby information, news, deals, and events on their smartphones and computers. It’s currently being tested in its beta form in more than 30 neighborhoods and cities across the U.S. including in San Francisco, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Brooklyn, and in Birmingham, Ferndale, and Royal Oak, Michigan.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphone to sell at local Wal-Mart stores

RIM’s latest uber-messaging phone, the BlackBerry Torch 9800, looks to be headed to local Wal-Mart store shelves. The Wal-Mart website that the smartphone is coming soon and is expected to launch in August 2010. With the device launching on AT&T on August 12, we expect the Torch will hit Wal-Mart soon after. The Torch made its debut on Tuesday in NYC and is a newly designed BlackBerry with both a touchscreen and full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. For more information, check out our hands-on video.

Google Maps 4.4 for Android adds Places feature for local search

Today Google updated its Maps for Android application to version 4.4. Google Maps 4.4 adds local search using a dedicated Places icon on your desktop. Places lets you search for nearby restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels, attractions, ATMs, Gas Stations, and more. Places supports voice search queries, and even specific place names. The included Place Pages support provides information on each location such as reviews, prices, hours, and more. Maps 4.4 supports Android 1.6 devices and newer and is available in the Android market. The update will come soon to BlackBerry.
