IDC: 18 million tablets, 12 million e-readers shipped in 2010
We’ve already seen Apple boast that it’s sold 15 million iPads in 2010 and commanded more than a 90 percent market share, but IDC has now come in and provided a broader picture of the tablet market as a whole — and e-readers, too. Not surprisingly, it too found that the tablet industry is basically all about Apple at the moment, although it’s market share did dip from 93 percent in the third quarter to 73 percent in Q4, which averages out to 83 percent for the year — all told, there were 18 million tablets sold in 2010. Things are a bit more competitive in the e-reader market — where there were 12 million devices sold — although Amazon is still head and shoulders above everyone else with a 48 percent share. Interestingly, it’s followed not by Barnes & Noble as you might expect but by Pandigital, which just eeked into the number two spot for Q4 (though B&N is slightly ahead for the full year). Hanvon came in third based largely on strong sales in China, and Sony rounded out the top five with sales of 800,000 units in 2010. Check out the press release after the break for some additional details

Review: Apple Universal Dock (2010)
Start with the Universal Dock, which looks almost identical to the version introduced in 2007. Made from glossy white plastic with a “well” in the top center that can fit any Dock Connector-equipped iPod, the Dock has received only the most modest external changes: the “iPod” name is gone from its gray rubber bottom, and a new A1371 part number differentiates it from the A1256 prior model. Since the well hasn’t been redesigned,…
Free apps roundup for March 4th, 2010
Section: iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, iDevice Apps, Originals

This week on the Free Apps Roundup: If you’re a DirectTV subscriber and an iPad owner, you’ll definitely want to check out the controller app that can schedule recordings, browse the guide and more. Musicians will appreciate Click Station, a more feature rich metronome. Then there are the ever-popular limited time freebies. There’s a timer, a music controller and a Seussified camera. What are you waiting for? Check it out.
- DirecTV – Now you can remote control your DirecTV service with your iPad. It gives you access to more information about the shows you’re currently watching and those you maybe should. You can change channels, set recordings and search the guide. What you can’t do is use it to stream content to your iPad. It’s still just a remote.
- Click Station – Need more than a metronome? Click Station may be just what you need. In addition to being a regular metronome, you can actually customize the clicks to your liking. No longer will you be forced to have but one setting on your metronome. It may even help get those creative juices flowing.
- Disney Second Screen: Bambi Edition – If you purchased Bambi on Blu-ray, you can enter your Disney Movie Rewards code into this app to unlock even more extra content. There are tons of images, flipbooks, challenges and more. Think of it as a different sort of Blu-ray extra.
- Dr. Seuss Camera – Who doesn’t love Seuss? No one. This app Seussifies your photos into one of 11 cards based on artwork by the Dr. himself. It’s currently free to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
- CarTunes – Here’s an app that makes it even easier to use your iPhone or iPod touch to play music in the car. Instead of looking for buttons to touch, you can use one-handed gestures to control playback. That should be much safer. This one is “50% off,” which thanks to fictional math makes it free for a limited time.
- TIMER : MIN TO GO – How do you improve on Apple’s built in timer? Here’s one way that’s pretty cool. It displays the minutes left on your timer as an app badge. Pretty nifty. Get it before they start charging again.

Nearly 30% Of Motorola Mobility’s Revenue In 2010 Came From Verizon
Verizon is pretty important to Motorola. Anyone with a TV could have told you that; just about every third commercial on the air last year was focused on Verizon’s “DROID Does” campaign and whichever Motorola DROID phone VZW was touting at the time. Still, I don’t think I ever could have guessed just how important [...]
