Palm’s web-based Ares SDK goes gold

Four solid months after going into open beta, Palm’s entirely web-based SDK for webOS — the so-called Ares SDK — has reached version 1.0, bringing “lots and lots” of new features along for the ride. Biggies include UI-less components that add functionality to your application, in-line help, undo and copy / paste functionality (for the SDK, that is), and a plug-and-play multitouch-enabled Google Maps widget that you can drop into your own screens. Even if you don’t own a Pre and have no intention of commercializing a webOS app, it sounds like a blast to screw around with — and considering how important the third-party ecosystem is for Palm right now, we’d say that’s a good thing. Interested parties can get set up with the gold build right now.

Adobe delays Flash 10.1 for Android, webOS, BlackBerry, public beta opens for Android

You can now sign up to be a part of the first public beta for Adobe’s Android Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2.0. Adobe didn’t confirm when the beta products would be available for testing, but Adobe’s CEO Shantanu Narayen recently said that his company has delayed the launch of Flash 10.1 for Android, webOS, and BlackBerry until the second half of this year. Originally the company planned to launch the products during the first half of the year.

Nokia X5 leaks out, snuggles between X3 and X6

A new lozenge-style Nokia handset has surfaced in some inventory screens, and it appears to be… well, what it is. A touchscreen phone from Nokia. It’s not clear what OS it’s going to be running, but its specs are partially detailed. It has a nice 5-megapixel camera on the back with Zeiss glass and an LED flash. Also unknown is whether it will share the XpressMusic branding with its X3 and X6 brethren, but I would guess yes on that one.

It’ll support GSM/WCDMA, and comes with no internal memory to speak of (couple hundred megs) but has a MicroSD slot. Looks to me like it doesn’t have any physical buttons on it anywhere, but that’s a pretty blurry shot. They could very well be touch-sensitive light-ups. Looks like a nice little phone, but who knows whether we’ll ever see it with any of our local carriers?

AT&T scheduled to get Sony Ericsson X10 in week 30 of this year

We’ve just gotten word from a trusted source that AT&T is currently signed up to get Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 in fiscal week 30 of 2010, which represents the tail end of July and the beginning of August. Naturally, those plans can change — AT&T has been known to drop Sony Ericssons from the lineup at the last minute, after all, and there’s no way they could have that week 30 time frame locked in with certainty this far in advance — but it seems at least plausible considering the fact that an 850 / 1900MHz 3G version of the device exists (we’ve tested it) and that AT&T’s significantly ramping up its support for Android this year. Of course, the relevance of an Android 1.6-powered X10 in the third quarter is an open question, but sadly, it could very well be the top-of-the-line Android device in AT&T’s roster even that far down the road. We’ll see how this plays out.

Radio Shack to stop carrying Sprint Palm Pre, Pixi

A Sprint spokesperson told Barron’s that Radio Shack will begin phasing out the webOS powered Palm Pre and Palm Pixi phones in favor of a new smartphone. Speculation has it that the new device could be an upcoming BlackBerry device, although that has not yet been confirmed. “This is in line with Radio Shack’s normal product planning process – there is a designated amount of space in stores for handsets and they work to keep the lineup of devices as current as possible,” Sprint told Barron’s.
