Rumors of RIM buying big touchscreens spark further rumors of tablet plans

Reports from component suppliers in Asia have RIM buying an unspecified number of 8.9″ touchscreens from supplier Hon Mai. The sources are unnamed and the original report is proving difficult to track down; the only copy of it seems to be in CrackBerry’s possession (copied below). That already places this rumor in pretty unlikely territory, but hey, you be the judge.

Add in to the mix that RIM’s Mike Lazaridis publicly stated last year that they were not developing a tablet and had no specific plans to do so, and the rumor is looking even less substantiated.

If they did buy up a few touchscreens, then what? It’d be the first indications of a large, innovative company toying around with the idea of a tablet device. Perhaps after playing with an iPad and seeing Microsoft pushing tablets hard via third parties, RIM felt they may as well see if they could whip up something internally that was of any potential utility to their users. As it stands, though, there’s no real evidence that this order actually took place, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we never hear anything more about it.

SanDisk calls it: Microsoft Pink being announced on Monday

Good secrets are hard to keep, and it looks like at least one of Microsoft’s trusted partners has spilled the beans on the company’s big announce for Monday. SanDisk used the occasion — the unannounced occasion, that is — to let some members of the press know today that Microsoft’s Pink devices will be compatible with its line of microSD cards. That seems like a pretty lame way to ride on the coattails of a big hardware launch, but then again, when your most exciting products are nondescript pieces of plastic half the size of a postage stamp, how else are you going to make the news?

SanDisk calls it: Microsoft Pink being announced on Monday originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 18:36:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Debunk: No, iPhone OS 4.0 Beta isn’t jailbroken.. yet.

This’ll be a quick one, because we want to nip this little rumor in the bud before it takes off.

A handful of blogs around the vast Internets are reporting that the just released iPhone OS 4.0 Beta has already been hacked to pieces, with a jailbreak solution already being discovered. This is inaccurate.

The truth: it’s all just a bit of miscommunication. When asked (via Twitter) when he would start working on a 4.0 jailbreak, well known iPhone hacker ih8sn0w responded “I already have. :) ” Short story shorter, this was misinterpreted as “I’ve already jailbroken it” rather than “I’ve already started”, blog posts were written, and the rest is history.

While iH8Snow is working on a jailbreak and thinks its possible, they haven’t discovered any way in just yet.
